Practice makes perfect things easier…
This week was exhausting. But thanks to practice, I pushed through and met my goals.
Here are three realizations I had about the value of practice.
Practice makes CONSISTENCY easier
I publish daily videos on social media, and today was Day 40 ✅.
From practice, I learned it takes me 30-60 minutes to select, edit, and upload a 5-10 second video. So even when I’m drained, knowing I need AT MOST 1 hour to stay consistent fuels my motivation.
This also changed my perception of time. For example, on Mondays & Wednesdays, I have 90 minutes between classes. I previously viewed this gap as “dead time” but now see it as an opportunity to create one video.
TL;DR—Practice sets benchmarks, making it easier to stay consistent
Practice makes INNOVATION easier
My friend called last night and highlighted the innovation aspect of practice. This is evident when comparing my first and my latest Instagram video.
First Video (June 6, 2022):
Latest Video (February 9, 2023):
It’s easy to think I developed my latest style overnight. But in reality, it took months of practice and public failure.
I love MrBeast’s perspective on the Lex Fridman podcast when he said,
“Just fail… Make 100 videos and improve something every time”
- MrBeast (video link)
This mentality is gold. I have no idea what my Instagram videos will be in a couple months. But I’m excited to look back on my latest video the same way I viewed my first video today.
TL;DR—Practice leads to unpredictable levels of innovation
Practice makes THE FUTURE easier
On Tuesday, I filmed some basketball with a rented camera from the university. When I went to transfer the footage, my laptop could not open the videos because the files were too large. This was frustrating, but now I know to always check the camera settings before recording.
I’ve had countless similar moments since launching Regular Hoops… and I’m hoping for more.
It’s not that I enjoy those problems. Instead, I want to learn how to avoid them sooner rather than later. And most of that happens from failure.
Imagine if that unusable content from Tuesday was for a brand partnership! That would cost everyone involved their time and damage the Regular Hoops reputation.
TL;DR—Today’s problems are tomorrow’s solutions
PS—Shoot me a message if this resonated. And if you enjoyed this, you might also like reading two quick stories about the Regular Hoops Network Effect.
So true, I have grown to cherish the mistakes that I have made along the way because I get to fix them and turn them into lessons learnt for others.
